Applus+ IDIADA deploys connected and automated vehicle (CAV) testing services on public roads

Within the Catalonia Living Lab framework, an Applus+ IDIADA project deploys connected and automated vehicle (CAV) testing services on public roads. The main objective of the project is to address all client needs in testing CAV on public roads. Several investigations and studies have been undertaken to understand these needs, including a market study, a comparison of similar initiatives and a series of 30 interviews with potential clients. A series of objectives was then defined in order to meet the needs identified.

The configuration shown here contains various subsystems and covers the bulk of potential clients’ CAV testing needs. For example, the test vehicle [3] can be equipped with high-end reference sensors, a D-GPS system, a CAN bus reader and a communication device. A D-GPS base station provides very accurate positioning data, while dedicated roadside sensors [2] give the test vehicle information about other road users on a certain section of the road, through a local communication network. The public road test can be monitored and analysed in real-time in a workshop onsite [1]. High-definition maps of the public road are uploaded, which the autonomous vehicle can use to drive itself [5], while a digital representation of the public road can be used for virtual simulations [5]. The route is carefully selected and planned [6], the vehicle is driven by a trained CAV driver [4] and a safety supervisor [7] ensures adherence to all safety protocols.

Some of the systems shown are already available, while others will be deployed shortly. The aim is to use this configuration not only in urban areas as shown, but on any public road, from highways to inter-urban and rural roads.

The development and testing of CAV technologies on open roads and in controlled areas is increasingly in demand. The Catalonia Living Lab project aims to reinforce our capability to provide solutions to new mobility challenges and to increase our knowledge of technology and requirements across the automotive sector.
